Yes, a really long meet was what this weekend turned out to be. I am very pleased with our results and our new take on the meet. As our team "matures" on the top end, we need to look at bigger competitions as our main focus, so we for the first time, worked our way right through this meet. Some tired, sore swimmers were told to swim with the idea of doing really good races letting the times take care of themselves. What we ended up with was a whole bunch of great races out of the group, and a whole lot of confidence as we move forward into racing season. We had many more best times than I thought we would have considering the venue we were swimming at (it is not really the fastest pool for many different reasons).
It is really interesting to have for the first time at this meet a noticeable presence in the older age groups. I think in one year, we will be more than just noticeable with what we are working with and the potential that they have. I am truly inspired by our group effort and what the future holds for this group. Our younger group rested for the meet as they should have, and our performance across the board was excellent. We had lots of our swimmers participating in the finals and the excitement that brings, especially in a loud indoor pool. This is the way we will approach this meet in the future - a rest meet for the younger group, and a tired racing meet for the oldsters.
As always, thanks to all you parents who helped out at this meet. Hanging out for hours just so your kid can swim a relay is appreciated and it really helps us create a sense of team. Even though we had no timing coordinator to divvy up the responsibility, our chairs were always full and I had no worries in that regard. A special thanks goes out to Anne Wright (mother of John and Frazer) who came to the meet to stroke and turn on Saturday even though her kids were not participating (John is currently back east swimming and studying at boarding school and Frazer is a year away from being ready for this meet). She did it so our team could live up to our requirements for officials. Above and beyond the call of duty, and I truly appreciate the gesture and the loyalty to our program..
Now onto the next challenge!!
