21 of our swimmers made the rather long truck to Morgan Hill for the Far Western Championships, which is by far our most competitive age group meet that we participate in. I am pleased to say that we swam well in just about all cases. Our effort was great 100% of the swims. The Angry Tuna really had the attitude that they were there to excel and not just glad to be swimming.
We had a Far Western Champion in Stephanie Christofferson in the girls 13-14 200 breast. We have had winners at this meet before, but always in the sprints. This is the first champion that I coached that had to have endurance in order to win. Stephanie practiced more than anyone this fall and winter and her payoff was that swim. Hopefully that will be an inspiration to others to up their attendance and get to practice more (mornings anyone?).
Brad Cline was an incredible stud at this meet making finals in 6 events, doing best times in all 7 of his events and setting 3 team records in the process. A true big meet swimmer.
Elizabeth and Charlotte Kamai made finals for the first time at this meet with Elizabeth setting a team record in the 50 free and Charlotte having a board swim with her 50 free. Deborah Roth also made a final in the 100 back, showing incredible determination against some mighty big girls!! She will be a force to reckon with as she gets older. We also had two swimmers, Chris Packer and Laura Slater, who both just missed finals with their efforts. They were in the hunt and left their energies in the pool, which is what it is all about.
We had a record number of relays that swam this year. This shows the growth of our team in terms of depth. All the relays were competitive as well as fun even though we all froze the last two nights.
I am proud of our team.
