Each year the Marin Athletic Foundation honors two students from 10 of the county's highschools who excelled both on and off the playing fields. We are very proud of long time North Bay Aquatic swimmer Mary Gossel, who was selected for Redwood Highschool. Mary's dedication, leadership and academic accomplishments make this a very well deserved recognition.

Marin Athletic Foundation Awards Banquet

From the Marin Independent Journal May 9, 2004:
Checking out Mary Gossel's passel of awards leads one to think, "When did someone patent waterproof textbooks?" That's because Gossel was not only a four-year varsity swimmer and two-year varsity water polo player, but she also took home the Dartmouth Book Award, the Governor's Scholars Award and the Bank of America Award and also was a four-year member of the Califonia Scholarship Federation (including a stint as Redwood chapter president) and Redwood Honors Society. Gossel, who also played two years of varsity basketball, was MVP of the swim and water polo teams as a junior and captained both squads as well. Gossel also volunteered her time with the National Charity League. She will attend Cal and may swim or play water polo on a club level.

Both the MCAL and the BCL held their high school championships May 7th and 8th. Our High School tuna did well for their schools, with many making the finals and achieving personal bests. Stacy Sorensen, who has been training with us throughout the winter, won the 100 free at MCALs and did best times in both the 50 and the 100 free. Mary Gossel also did personal bests in the 200 and the 500 while taking 2nd in both those events. Aoife Duffy placed 4th in the same events as a freshman which bodes well for her future. Nicole Lung, even while ill, made it to the finals (200 IM, 100 fly) as did Lena Gustafson (200 IM, 100 breast), and Sandra Short (200 IM, 100 back).

At the BCL meet, long time tuna Annie Chisholm won her 100 breast as well as breaking a minute for the 100 free for the first time (always notable). Many new board swims were achieved in the process.

NCS May 14&15, 2004

For our High Schoolers who made it into the NCS, it was a great experience just to be there. NCS is one of the faster highschool meets in the nation and for the underclassmen, a look at what it takes to compete at that level. Congrats to the NBA qualifiers:
Lena Gustafson, Nicole Lung, Aoife Duffy, Mary Gossel, Annie Chisholm, and Stacy Sorensen.
